  4. What do we mean by community? • Communities of geography e.g. a village, a town, a parish or any geographical area • Communities of interest e.g. a hobby, an issue, service users, customers • Communities of faith/culture e.g. religion based groups, environmental groups

  5. Community Need: • Should be realistic • An opportunity to do things differently, solve a problem, or be innovative and create something new • A chance to make a difference • A way to sustain and thrive

  6. Where do you look for the opportunities? • Something changes • New initiativese.g. funding opportunities • Localism Act presents new opportunities: • Right to Challenge • Right to Bid – take over assets • An idea to improve how things are done and where they are done. • A response to an individuals needs

Market Research: • Community-led plans • Neighbourhood plans • General consultation • e.g. transport survey, village hall survey, user survey, customer satisfaction surveys, national/regional/county wide research • Why will what you plan to do be different? • Competitors • Who? Where? How? How much? • Complimentary Activities? • Market • Shrinking or expanding? • Customers • Who? Where from? Access? Payment? • Costs • Premises? Employment? Volunteers? Training? Overheads? • Funding • Loans? Sponsorship? Grants? Community Investment?

  8. What other planning might you need to do? • Feasibility Study • Community Consultation • Pilot your idea • Further desk research e.g. census, reports from other organisations, charities etc operating in your sector or working with your potential customers • Networking • Forums etc
