What is a Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) and what does it do? • All school boards in Ontario are required to have a Parent Involvement Committee (PIC). • 4 main responsibilities under Section 27(1) of Regulation 612 (School Councils & Parent Involvement Committees) are: • To develop effect communication strategies that the board and director can use in communication with parents and advise on the use of these strategies • To communicate information from the Ministry to school councils and parents • To work with the boards director to determine how funding for the parent engagement initiatives will be allocated; and • To work with school councils to share effective parent engagement practices and support initiatives that help build knowledge and skills that help PICs and school councils in their work.

  3. How are PICs different from school councils? School councils focus on an individual school PICs actively support the school councils of their board PICs provide advice at the board level.

  4. Who can be on a Parent Involvement Committee? • PICs are led by parents (Rep from each Family of Schools) • The director of education at the school board • A trustee Therefore parents have a direct link to the school board • The PIC also appoints up to three community members • PICs decide whether to include other members, such as principals, teachers and support staff to meet local needs • Parent members serve for a term of one or two years. Each parent member must be the parent or guardian of a student enrolled in a school that is part of the LDSB

  5. May I attend meetings? YES Check the board’s website to find out when and where meetings will be held As well as minutes of past meetings

  6. How do PICs help education in Ontario? • When parents and schools work together, there are many positive results. These include improved student achievement, reduced absenteeism, better behaviour and increased confidence among parents about their children’s education. The Ministry of Education, district school boards and schools all benefit from the important work parents do to support their children’s learning. They also benefit from hearing parent opinions and perspectives at the local, regional and provincial levels.

Do you have contacts of parents willing to volunteer that do not come to the meetings? How is the communication between the staff and the parents /& SAC?
