  1. Marjorie Boone Chloroplast

  2. Chloroplasts • Chloroplasts are found in plant and algal cells

  3. Main roles • Chloroplasts conducts photosynthesis • The photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll captures the energy from sunlight. • Chloroplasts stores the sunlight in the energy storage molecules ATP and NADPH while freeing oxygen from water.

  4. ATP & NADPH • ATP synthase binds ADP and P together as the hydrogen atoms. • NADP+ accepts and carries two pairs of hydrogen atoms, while becoming NADPH. • ATP and NADPH goes to the Calvin Cycle and is taken in. NADP+ and ADP is released to the light dependent reactions. • Carbon dioxide is taken in, and glucose is released in the light independent reaction.

  5. Thylakoids • Chloroplasts have thylakoids inside of them. • On the thylakoid membranes are photosynthetic pigments, including chlorophyll.

  6. Three types of plastid. • Chromoplastsare variously colored plastids. Mostly in tin flowers and fruits. • Chloroplasts, the presence of chlorophyll causes it to have the green plastids. • Leucoplasts is colorless and store the food of the plant body in the form of starch, protein and lipids.
