The “Right” • Included: • Business leaders • Republicans • Conservative Democrats (i.e. Southern Democrats) • Supreme Court • Main Criticisms: • 1) ND was “reckless” and “socialistic” • 2) ND had expanded Fed gov’t power at expense of states’ rights • 3) ND programs unconstitutional (Schechter v. United States)

  3. The “Left” • Included: • Democrats • Social Welfare Liberals • Far-Left Liberals • Main Criticism: • ND had not gone far enough to help people (wanted shift of wealth from rich to middle class and poor) • Notable Critics: • Huey Long (D-LA) • Father Charles Coughlin • Dr. Francis Townsend

  4. The 2nd New Deal (1935-1938) • Response to attacks by the “Right” and “Left” • Different from 1st ND-How? • 1st ND emphasized economic recovery • 2nd ND emphasized social justice
