  4. St. Valentine lived in the Roman Empire in the third century A.D. • At that time, Emperor Claudius the Second had forbidden marriages.

  5. Valentine continued to perform marriages in secret. • He was caught and executed in A.D. 270.

  6. During the Middle Ages, people began to use the day as a celebration for lovers.

  7. Today, it is customary for children to exchange Valentines cards at school. • Some also give gifts of flowers or candy to their Valentines.
