  4. Purpose of This Workshop: Give practical information on how to use mindfulness to help with work & life balance Give hands on activities to use in your classrooms to enhance student learning

  5. Mindfulness is grounded in more than 30 years of scientific study --most major universities have mindfulness programs-- University of Toronto, McGill, Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford, Oxford, to name a few... MINDFULNESS IS SCIENCE-BASED

  6. This is Mindfulness

  7. Let’s Start With a Basic Practice: Anchor Breath & Stretch

  8. From Our Experience We Know That: The roots of mindfulness need to be acknowledged and respected; It has been practiced for 1000’s of years. Mindfulness is the foundation for all other learning. We know that once students are introduced to it, they feel the benefits and ask for it. Mindfulness needs to be practiced. Commonalities of successful people example: Oprah, Jay-Z, Kobe Bryant, Steve Jobs etc.—focus, calm, in regulation of emotions--Trains your brain

  9. Nicole Noticed: That students were increasingly getting more anxious and unable to deal with simple pressures, like assignment deadlines. They were becoming less resilient to common teenage issues. After taking the Mindfulness without Borders course on Mindfulness Ambassador Councils 2010, the buy in from the students was immediate. They seemed to crave this “down” time to reset and refocus. Many reported that they really looked forward to coming to mindfulness sessions. Also, after attending “Happy Teachers will change the world” retreat hosted by Thich Nhat Hanh & Plum village in 2013, deeper realization and understanding as to how important it is for teachers to adopt the mentality of mindfulness.

  10. Rachael Noticed: That many of her students were having harder times focusing in class. And at the time, she was taking her Masters of Education course with a focus on mindfulness, and meditation with Jack Miller. She began to implement simple meditation techniques at the beginning of class and noticed the difference instantly. Soon after she was trained by Mindfulness without Borders by the suggestion of her sister Nicole and began implementing mindfulness councils in her classes. The Benefits were HUGE. That is why we wrote the SELM course ….

  11. SELM Course IDC3O1: Social-Emotional Learning and Mindfulness Purpose:Through this course, students will have the opportunity to nurture cognitive, intra-personal and interpersonal skills that will aide in their journey as lifelong learners. Benefits: The social and emotional competencies are skill sets that can be cultivated to help students prepare for personal and professional success. The mastery of these essential skills enhances health and wellness, strong character and ethical development, caring and respectful interaction, and prepares individuals to develop a sense of personal responsibility for the larger community by strengthening essential skills such as: problem solving, conflict resolution, responsible decision making, relationship building, goal-setting, and self-discipline.

  12. Units Include: 1. Theory of Mindfulness (Science of Mindfulness) 2. Catholic Meditation (Geared to Catholic Boards) 3. Theory of Social Emotional Learning 4. Mindfulness in Literature, Film & Art 5. Mindfulness Ambassador Weekly Councils 6. Independent Study - Pay it Forward

  13. Time For Another Practice: Take 5

  14. How Can Mindfulness Help Teachers? Analogy of the airplane—In an airplane, some people like being on it and some don’t. Everyone realizes that plane can get you where you need to go, or want to go. Everyone on the plane carries baggage. Flight attendants make us store the baggage for safety. If we leave baggage everywhere, people could trip and fall and get injured. Flight attendants also tell the adults to put on the oxygen masks first before assisting children. https://youtu.be/Rjc57hXNcwI

  15. The classroom is the same. Mindfulness allows everyone to manage all the emotional baggage we all come with. Teachers need to make sure they are coming to the classroom with their ‘oxygen’ masks on. We must be able to take care of ourselves first before we can expect ourselves to take care of our students and teach them to manage their emotional baggage.

  16. Why is it Important for Teachers to Practice Mindfulness? Avoid letting personal problems interfere with your job to be effective teachers. Effective teachers avoid bringing their baggage to the classroom. Your energy sets up the feeling in the classroom. Student’s energy can change when they enter your classroom if they feel safe and welcome. “At the end of the day people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.”― Maya Angelou

  17. Sample Mindful Routines For Teachers to Maintain Mental Health Wake up--2 minutes of right & left nostril breathing. Get up and stretch. Take 5 (breath in and out 5 times for 5 seconds) before you teach each class. Anchor breath (slow, deep inhalations for 5-10 minutes, watching your thoughts) in your bed before sleep, or after you wake up. Mindfully brushing your teeth or showering before work etc… Mindfully drinking your coffee or eating breakfast (focused & intentional) Look in the mirror in the morning, and repeat the mantra, “I am good, I am worthy, I am a good teacher,” Anything positive.

  18. Example of Positive Affirmations/Mantras https://youtu.be/ztW8tHXt-nE “I am smart, I am blessed, I can do anything…”

  19. Time to Practice: Right - Left Nostril Breathing

  20. Sample Classroom Mindful Routine Teachers spend a lot of time creating amazing lesson plans, but if students can’t focus. The lesson plan goes out the door. So this is why a mindful routine could help. Everyday You Can: Have students come in class perhaps and grab a sheet of meditative colouring paper, leave out pencil crayons and allow students to mindfully colour for the first 5-10 minutes of class. OR Turn off the lights, ask students to get into their comfortable meditation positions, put on soft meditation music and recite a guided meditation, could last approximately 5-10 minutes. OR Engage in right-left nostril breathing at the beginning of class. Have students inhale slowly for 5 seconds in the right nostril and exhale slowly for 5 seconds out of their left nostril. Repeat for a cycle of 5 times, ask students to write a 5-10 minute reflection of whatever they need to purge.

  21. Breathing Practices for Students Examples of When We Can Do with Students: • Before lesson begins. • Before a test, or presentation. • Any time during the class as needed for behaviour, focus & calm. Examples: Take 5, right and left nostril breathing, anchor breath, mindful listening, body scan, mindful eating...
