  3. Rise of the Khmer • Golden Age started in the ninth century • Jayavarman II started the rise of the Khmer • United the empire under one ruler • Established the capital of Hariharalaya • In the Tonle Sap area of Cambodia

  4. Indravarman 1 • Started an extensive building program • Built shrines • Started building a reservoir system

  5. Yasovarman 1 • Expanded the irrigation systems • Reduced the dependence on Monsoons • Moved the capital to Yashodharapura

  6. Suryavarman 2 • Expanded the Khmer empire through warfare • Strengthened political relations with China • Built the Angkor Watt • Largest religious center in Southeast Asia • Dedicated to the Hindu gods
