  3. Were does the Brown Trout live? • New Zealand, south of the Coromandel Peninsula • Trout live mainly in rivers • Also found in ponds, lakes, estuaries, seas & streams

  4. What lives in the trout's habitat? • Insects • Flies, Ladybirds, Dragonflies, Nymphs (immature insects) • Eels • Native fish • Banded Kokopu, Giant Bully, Koaro, ShortjawedKokopu • Plants • Moss • Lilly Pads • Fern • flowers

  5. Life cycle • 1st egg • 2ndalevin • 3rd fry • 4th sub adult • 5th adult • 6th spawning adult

  6. Description • Size: They grow to 35-61 cms but can get as big as 80 cms. • Weight: Can reach 5 kg but most are between 1-2 kg. • Colouring: Fresh water Brown Trout are mainly silver with a few silver spots and a white belly.

  7. What are trout's predators? Bigger fish Humans Birds

  8. Adaptive features • It hides under rocks, wood and vegetation and quickly hides if it sees movement on the riverbank. • Fish have fins that we humans don't have. The fins make them swim faster. • Big eyes to seek if predators are coming.

  9. What do trout eat? • Insects • Smaller fish • Frogs • Even other trout's eggs Above: trout eating frog.

  10. Brown Trout’s scientific and family name • Scientific name: Salmo Trutta. Family name: Salonidae

  11. How smart is a trout? • Trout's aren't as smart as us. Here is a story that will show you why. My friend and I were going down to the river at my holiday house when we saw a little pond with these fast but small fish. Then we thought we saw a log but realised it was a trout!!!!

  12. Why was the trout in the pond The fish was in the pond because the river must have come up when it was raining and flooded the whole place. The fish got stuck in the pond because the river level dropped after the flood. then then later
