  1. Asset Management for Cavities and Computers at DESY Jens Kreutzkamp DESY, IPP Division

  2. Overview • What is and why do we need Asset Management? • Asset Management Overview • Activities at DESY lars.hagge@desy.de jens.kreutzkamp@desy.de FOR MORE INFO...

  3. What is Asset Management? • managing the technical and information infrastructure • e.g. contracts, responsibilities, locations, reporting, ... • tracking and analyzing the “technology base” • basis for planning, predicting and costing

  4. Is Asset Management necessary for DESY? • Each division has its „assets“ • magnets, cavities, computers, software, ... • Common questions according to devices • Who is thecontact person? • What is the status or history? • Who has experience? • Where can I get information?

  5. Is Asset Management necessary for DESY? • local databases exist to manage devices, e.g. • counting software licenses (IT division) • magnet alignment, power cabling, ... (accelerator division) • maintaining fire extinguishers (safety division) • divisions need to relate/integrate their information, e.g. • magnet alignment, location, supplies, ...

  6. Overview • What is and why do we need Asset Management? • Asset Management Overview • Activities at DESY lars.hagge@desy.de jens.kreutzkamp@desy.de FOR MORE INFO...

  7. is part of an accelerator module asset „magnet“ features of asset „magnet“- max. current- serial number- length connections ofasset „magnet“- e.g. wires to the power supply documents associated with asset „magnet“ asset „coil “ asset „yoke“ asset „stand“ components of asset „magnet“ Example

  8. features of asset „computer“- RAM- CPU- serial number Example is part of a computer farm asset „computer“ connections ofasset „computer“- e.g. wires to the network documents associated with asset „computer“ asset „monitor“ asset „floppy disk“ asset „keyboard“ components of asset „computer“

  9. is part of an accelerator module asset „magnet“ features of asset „magnet“- max. current- serial number - length connections ofasset „magnet“- e.g. wires to the power supply asset „coil “ asset „yoke “ asset „stand“ Example documents associated with asset „magnet“ components of asset „magnet“

  10. Data Structure • assets are organized into categories and subcategories • assets can be components of or connected with other assets • assets may have features (e.g. current, RAM, pressure) • assets may have related documents (files or hyperlinks) • an example (screenshots)...

  11. Additional Features • Web Access • HTML-client for casual users • scripting for customization • Java-based fully-functional GUI • Mobile Computing • light-weight clients • auto-identification, e.g. via bar code

  12. Overview • What is and why do we need Asset Management? • Asset Management Overview • Activities at DESY lars.hagge@desy.de jens.kreutzkamp@desy.de FOR MORE INFO...

  13. The Pilot Environment • import from local databases • IT devices, safety-relevant devices, accelerator components OK • integrate with existing systems • Document Management System TuoviWDM OK • IT system monitoring agents • customize user interfaces • views for native client and passive Web interfaceactive • fully-functional Web-client • connect with mobile devices • introduce identification (e.g. bar code) technology • develop client software

  14. AM Project Steps • prepare pilot environment • set up long-term project team • strategic product development • Java-GUI, mobile client, special-purpose interfaces, ... • co-operation agreement with system provider? • operation and maintenance procedures • implement production system

  15. Conclusion • The current situation shows the necessity of a central information repository. • The future focus of an Asset Management System is to support and maintain the technical equipment for the planned TESLA project • cavities, magnets and other devices
