  2. Bows and arrows have had many uses, from hunting to war to archery. First bows were very simple and used for hunting animals that could not be caught. Then, as they got more advanced, they were used for war. Now they are used mainly for the sport of archery. The tools for archery are a bow, arrows, and (though not completely necessary) a quiver. A long bow and quiver with arrows.

  3. Evidence from historians suggests that bows and arrows originated 25,000 to 50,000 years ago. When they were first made, bows were used to hunt. They originally looked like D-shaped sticks with animal hides for skin and sharpened sticks for arrows. Old bows were made of wood, usually hickory, yew, orange, or lemon. They eventually became used for war, with the English long bow proving to be the best. A prehistoric cave drawing of people using bows.

  4. There is evidence that bows originated all over the populated world (except Australia). Cave drawings were also found showing hunters using bows and arrows dating back thousands of years ago.

  5. Now, replaced in war and hunting by guns, bows are only used in the Olympics as a sport. Modern bows and arrows are made of aluminum, fiberglass, and wood. A complete modern set of a bow, arrows, and a quiver.

  6. Cave drawings and carvings were found in Egypt (shown), Spain, France, North Africa, and many other places.

  7. Long bows are a type of bow. They are very tall, or long (hence the name), and usually shoot a lot farther and harder than normal bows. They are commonly used for the Summer Olympics.

  8. English long bows were the best weapons in war until guns and other firearms were invented. They were used in The Hundred Year’s War, which was 116 years long. They are some of the most powerful bows ever made.

  9. English longbows are very powerful.

  10. Short bows are shorter than longbows (duh) but, if the string is tight enough, can shoot just as far. Also, being smaller, they can be carried a bit easier.

  11. Two short bows.
