  2. Nevado del Ruiz Facts • 14th November 1985 • In Colombia • Long dormant volcano • Northern Andies • One of 4 volcanoes near there • Biggest volcano on the Andies • Covered in snow • 1800 feet

  3. Nevado Del Ruiz • Population of armero 28,000. • 85% of the city swept away. • A few houses standing. • Water filled with sulphur. • Melted snow caused a avalanche. • Mud, rocks and water help sweep it away. • Mudslides covered most of town.

  4. Nevado Del Ruiz • Smoke 26,000 feet into the air • A plane passed buy passengers were told to put on there oxygen masks. • Rescuers were only there for an hour and had to leave again as mudslides continued After struggling 12 hours to get in. • Houses ,shops and hotels destroyed. • 7 other villages destroyed.

  5. Nevado Del Ruiz The impact of the eruption. Magma rose upwards inside the Ruiz summit. As the peak became warmer, snow and ice melted causing a series of minor mudflows. Melted water, snow and ice ran down the mountainside into the river. The lagunillas River flooded. As the snow and ice melted, ash from previous eruptions was turned into mud.

  6. Nevado Del Ruiz The impact of the eruption. 30 metre high and travelling at 80km per hour the mudflow descended down the mountain towards the town of Armero.

  7. Nevado del Ruiz how did people try to make this never happen again? Following the 1885 eruption the ‘Volcano Disaster Assistance Program’ (VDAP) was set up. The VDAP aims to reduce the number of fatalities caused by volcano eruptions in developing countries and limiting the economic loss. Many of the people living in Armero region are employed in agriculture. Because of the ash deposited by volcano eruptions, the soil around the Armero region is very fertile.
