SBHC Advisory Council Purpose • Purpose: Capacity Building, Outreach & Advocacy • Increase our involvement in the community and at the state level to ensure • that ALL children have accessible, quality healthcare. • Involve the local community, representing diverse and non-traditional allies, including youth, minorities and consumers, as compelling advocates to shape the content, quality, delivery and financing of health care in this community. • Improve community partners’ capacity to do public education and outreach, and to advocate on behalf of SBHCs, both at the local and state levels. Note: As a result of an effective Advisory Council, grant and funding requirements are also fulfilled. 1

  3. Advisory Council Members' Role Description • Be familiar with and supportive of the SBHC mission, goals, policies, programs and services. Assist in identifying the strengths and needs of the SBHC. • 2. Be a sounding board by providing feedback and ideas. Provide honest, constructive, creative input as it regards to SBHC issues. • 3. Support SBHC vision of health care, while anticipating future health care trends and responding to those trends in ways that positively impact the SBHC program. • 4. Although not responsible for establishing SBHC policies/procedures, be guardians of core values. • 5. Be a representative for, and advocate for the needs and interests of SBHC clients. • 6. Be ambassadors for the SBHC program by educating about, advocating for and promoting Centers in the community. • 7… • 8… 2

Summary Do's & Don'ts • DO: • Membership: Maintain relationships by personally staying in touch – calls & notes… • Multi-cultural, diverse representation from your community • Fund development & business savvy folks, even though the SBHC is a non-profit. • Main medical providers in your community • Get members aligned with mission, values & set goals that have mutual benefits. • Set-up subcommittee tasks with specific goals & deadlines. • Meeting Management: Agenda, Start/stop on time, Include all voices, Summary Notes… • Pose questions and provide background info beforehand so meeting provides a venue • for a dialogue and problem-solving.
