  2. RATIONALE “Prison educators currently come from a wide range of backgrounds and may have no specific training or experience in working with offenders. In addition, non-educational prison staff and other professionals involved in supporting offenders can play a vital role in motivating them to take up learning opportunities and therefore can help to create a positive environment for learning within the prison.” From ‘Pathways to Inclusion: Strengthening European Cooperation in Prison Education & Training’, report on the European Conference on Prison Education in Budapest 2010, organised by the Grundtvig programme of the EC

KEY FINDING “A key questions for delivering arts in Europe’s prisons is proper preparation, both for outside artists and for those already working in prisons with limited experience … Those leading arts programmes need to be properly briefed and prepared, not only about the approaches they use but also about the context in which they work.”

EXISTING TRAINING & GUIDANCE IN THE UK A lot of past and existing artists training and guidance… • Escape Artists, London: ‘Arts Practitioners Training’ • Prison Arts Foundation, Belfast: Staff Induction • The Unit for the Arts and Offenders, Canterbury: accredited framework for artists wishing to work in the criminal sector • Arts Alliance, London: ‘Criminal Justice, An Artists Guide’ • Hannah Hull, London: ‘Art vs Rehab’ • & lots more….

MAIN AIMS OF CRED-ABILITY • Bring all of those initiatives together, creating the first unified training for artists and others wanting to work in the Criminal Justice System • Transfer and pilot the training in other European countries: Germany, Lithuania and Latvia, to create the first course available at a European level • Organise accreditation at an international and a national level to ensure practitioners obtain a validated qualification on completion of the course • Promote and launch the training through a Cambridge conference in summer 2014

PROJECT OUTCOMES • Trainingwith accredited modules, covering all aspects of prison arts delivery • An interactive website with e-learning facilities & examples of good practice in a variety of formats • A consortium able to provide advice, training courses & workshops to those wishing to apply the training model

PROJECT PARTNERS: IN THE UK • The London College of Teachers (Project Contractor): is the UK's professional educational institute for teachers, supporting the teaching profession through networks of membership and qualifications. It is an international accrediting body. • Seeds for Growth (Project Manager): is a charity aiming to advance the education of those from disadvantaged communities, specialising in devising arts education programmes within the Criminal Justice Sector & other challenging settings. • Prison Arts Foundation (Project Partner): is a Northern Ireland charity aiming at releasing the creative self of all prisoners, ex-prisoners, young offenders and ex-young offenders, using all of the arts and crafts.

  10. PROJECT PARTNERS: RECEIVING THE TRANSFER • aufBruch (Project Partner & Steering Group member): is the most important theatre project within the German prison system. It aims to open the prison to the excluded public and to give the prisoners a language, a voice and a face through the arts. • Latvia Culture College (Project Partner): is one of the most experienced colleges in Latvia providing professional higher education programmes in arts and culture management. • Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences (Project Partner): is a major teacher training institution in Lithuania and provides continuing education by offering pre-and-in-service training for social educators, social workers, social, cultural and re-creative activity managers.

A THE HEART OF THE PROJECT • Its seeks to unify previous training initiatives  • Transfer the training to other countries to create a training relevant at a European level  • Cred-Ability is not just another training  • So firstly it needs to be relevant to arts practitioners and arts organisations in European countries. It needs to be relevant to you!
