  1. “Common Core” Standards for Health The Development of Health Measurement Topics Maine Cohort for Customized Learning Lee LeRoy, EDU 605

  2. HEALTH! So many exciting topics! Where do we begin?

  3. Maine Cohort for Customized Learning The Maine Cohort for Customized Learning (MCCL) is a statewide coalition of school systems, organizations, and individuals committed to supporting performance-based education in Maine school systems. Groups of teachers were assembled from around the state of Maine to identify Health Measurement Topics in lieu of the Common Core State Standards. Subject areas (health, music, art, physical education, foreign language, etc.) met individually to write learning targets in each area. Groups were led by knowledgeable, helpful experts utilizing the Maine Learning Results.

  11. Applying the standards in RSU 14 Curriculum Coordinator, Christine Hessler, and I will be pulling all of the RSU 14 Health teachers together In early May to evaluate where we are with the new Standards, to make adjustments to our curriculum, and to discuss the development of Common Assessments.

  12. Next steps… #1 - Curriculum Director, Christine Hessler and I have invited all Health teachers in the District to submit their current curriculum to us prior to meeting with us on Friday, May 10. #2 – We plan to review what is currently being taught and develop a comprehensive list of areas included that have been identified by the Cohort. #3 – RSU 14 Health Teachers will look at the new measurement topics and work together to re-align our curriculum. #4 – We will discuss assessments and which areas we will use particular types of assessments. We will also determine where formative and summative assessments can be used. #5 – We will identify Common Assessments. #6 – We will pilot our assessments, keep notes, and meet again at a designated time to calibrate their validity.

  13. Assessing for Learning… CRITICAL POINT! (sets the tone) First day of class – Inform students that ALL of them will “meet” or “exceed” the Standards in Health because that is what I am being paid to do – to teach them what they need to learn in order to be successful in High School Health. If students are not able to at least “meet” a standard then I will work with them one-on-one and do whatever it takes to help them be successful. This will be done during our Intervention Block or during after school help time. No one has ever “partially met” a standard in my classroom.

  14. Carefully selecting assessments to match well with the particular standard being assessed… • CPR = performance assessment • STD’s = re-teaching (presentation)/checklist • Nutrition Facts/Food Groups = concept map

  15. Calibration!!!

  16. FINE TUNING – Feedback, Discussions, Tweaking

  17. Reflection and Communication • Determine “the what”, “the who”, and “the how” on every level. • Plan with precision. • Have check-ins specifically and methodically built in so that the “follow through” cannot be ignored and will be most productive. • Be deliberate with how we carry out our business.

  18. Thank You!!!
