  3. Now: all living things are made of cells (cell theory) Cell: the basic, functional unit of life

  4. Characteristics of Living Things All living things... • Grow • Move • Respond to stimuli • Reproduce

  5. Growth • A result of the cells in your body increasing in number • New cells will grow to replace old cells that die.

  6. Movement • A change in position, shape or location (locomotion)

  7. Respond to Stimuli • Stimulus: anything that causes an organism to react. • May be external or internal

  8. Identify the stimulus & response

  9. Reproduction • Producing more of the same kind (offspring)

Magnifies 10x. • Body tube (barrel) -Holds the eye piece. • Coarse adjustment knob -Used to focus at low or medium power. • Fine adjustment knob-Used to focus at high power. • Objective lenses-Used to magnify. • Revolving nosepiece-Holds the objective lenses. • Stage-Where you put the slide. • Iris diaphragm-Controls the amount of light • Light source-Supplies light. • Base-Supports the microscope. • Arm-Supports eyepiece.

For low power: Total magnification = 4 x 10 = 40 The total magnification of a low power lens is 40 x For Medium Power: Total magnification = 10 x 10 = 100 The total magnification of a medium power lens is 100 x For High Power: Total magnification = 40 x 10 = 400 The total magnification of a high power lens is 400 x

  16. The Cell Theory : • The cell is the basic unit of life. • All living things are made of one or more cells. • All cells come from other living cells.

  18. Cell Organelles... Cell membrane: • Found in both plant and animal cells • Surrounds and protects the contents of the cell • Controls the movement of materials in and out of the cell

  19. Cytoplasm: • Found in both plant and animal cells • Jelly-like fluid that in which the organelles float • Helps to move materials like food to different parts of the cell

  20. Cell wall: • Found only in plant cells • Tough, rigid structure that give plant cells their box-like shape • Made mostly of cellulose

  21. Nucleus: • Found in both plant and animal cells • Large round structure often visible • Contains the chromosomes • The “control centre” of the cell

  22. Vacuole: • Balloon-like spaces in the cytoplasm • Store materials that can not be used right away • Found in both plant and animal cells (smaller and more numerous in animal cells)

  23. Mitochondrion: • Oval, bean-like structures • Produces energy by breaking down food particles • Found in both plant and animal cells

  24. Chloroplast: • Green structures that contain chlorophyll • Capture the sun’s energy for photosynthesis • Found only in plant cells

  26. Dividing Cells • Necessary for growth and reproduction • Will replace cells that are dead or in need of repair • How does this happen?

  30. Energy for Cells • Cells need energy for all life processes. • Energy is stored in food called glucose(a type of sugar)

  31. To release energy cells must carry out cellular respiration. Here the energy is converted to another form of energy. • Takes place in the mitochondrion.

  32. Most energy is released as heat. • Oxygen is necessary for cellular respiration. • Carbon dioxide and water vapour are waste gases produced. These are removed from the cell
