  1. Choose the word that doesn’t belong. What ‘category’ do the other EIGHT words belong in? • Plants chlorophyll oxygen • Sun carbon dioxide water • Products hamburger reactants

  2. Photosynthesis and Respiration Ms. Twardowski Science 8 Tan

  3. The Sun • Energy from the Sun comes to us in the form of Electromagnetic waves such as: infrared, visible light, and UV.

  4. Visible Light • The sunlight we SEE is called visible light (or “white light”), which is made up of ALL the colors of the rainbow (ROYGBIV). • When this visible light is bent (refracted) it breaks up and you can see the colors of the rainbow.

  5. Energy from the Sun in the form of waves. • Each color of light has a different ‘wavelength’ and amount of energy. • Red has the longest wavelength/lowest energy. • Violet has the shortest wavelength/highest energy.

  6. ALL organisms require energy to survive!!! • It is the energy in the waves of light that plants use to run a process called “photosynthesis”, to make their own food (sugar/glucose) • Photo=light • Synthesis=to make from

  7. Photosynthesis = plants • Is a process that uses reactants and products. Occurs in the chloroplasts. • Reactant=substances that interact with each other to make something else. • Products=the substances that are made as a result of the interaction of the reactants.

  8. So… • If I asked you this question: What is YOUR definition of photosynthesis (think about the last two slides)?...What would you say? • Talk with your group and write the definition on the piece of paper/index card.

  9. Photosynthesis Reactants/Products • Reactant (taken in): Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere (CO2) • Reactant (taken in): Water (H20) usually taken up through the plant’s roots • Product (used or stored): Sugar/Glucose • Product (given out): Oxygen (O2)

  10. None of this would work without?... • EnergyPUT INTO this process by THE SUN!

  11. True/Yes = GreenFalse/No = Red • Reactants are = the substances that are made as a result of the interaction .

  12. Photosynthesis • Wouldn’t happen without… • On my count, call it out! • Hint (It’s a THREE letter word!)

  13. Respiration (the exchange of gases) = Animals • To access energy stored in sugar/glucose, plants AND animals “respire”. • The energy is stored in the mitochondria.

  14. Respiration (cont’d)… • Reactant (taken in)=Oxygen (O) • Reactant (taken in as food)=Sugar/Glucose (Oxygen and sugar react to produce Carbon Dioxide (CO2), water vapor, and chemical energy) • Product (given out)=Heat (Energy) is a waste product when organisms respire/breathe and causes you to breathe IN oxygen.

  15. Plants and animals have a very special relationship! They NEED each other!!! • The products of photosynthesis are used as reactants for respiration, and the products of respiration are used in photosynthesis!

  16. Be honest!!! • If you had to answer this question, and it was graded as a summative assignment, how well do you think you would do? • Question: What are the steps (the path of the Sun’s energy) of photosynthesis AND respiration? • Hold up a finger: • 1 = I can’t answer that question at all! • 2 = I can probably tell you most of the steps to ONE; but, not both! • 3 = I can probably tell you most of the steps to both. • 4 = I can tell you the steps to both…NO PROBLEM!

  17. Summarize!EQ: What is the path of the flow of energy through an ecosystem (from the Sun to a plant and ultimately through an animal)? LabelandColorthe GraphicOrganizer and you will see ! ! !
