  2. ASSONANCE • Definition: The repetition of vowel sounds. • Example: • “Thou foster child of silence and slow time”

  3. ALLITERATION • Definition: The repetition of initial constant sounds. • Example: • “Rain reigns roughly through the day.Raging anger from the skyPartners prattle of tormented tearsFrom clouds wondering whyLightning tears their souls apart.”

  4. Definition: A comparison between two objects with the intent of giving clearer meaning to one of them (does not use like or as). Example: “Sunshine, hope aglow, Streams from heaven's storeBringing smiles of warming graceWhich lighten heavy loads. Clouds are ships in full sailRacing across the sky-blue sea.” METAPHOR

  5. HYPERBOLE • Definition: Exaggeration for dramatic effect. • Example: • “Giants standing tall as mountainsTowering over midgetsBring eyes above the common groundTo heights no longer small. Arms of tree trunks wrapIn comfort gentle, softnessUnthought-of due to size,Yet welcomed in their strength.”

  6. SIMILE • Definition: A comparison between two objects using a word or comparison such as “like” or “as”. • Example: • “Notes dance across the page like stars twinkle in the night sky”

  7. PERSONIFICATION • Definition: A figure of speech which describes animals, ideas, or inanimate objects with human traits or abilities. • Example: • “Love smiled on him. Love walked right in and stole the shadows away. The sea that bares her bosom to the moon. Death stand above me, whispering low.”

  8. IMAGERY • Definition: Words or phrases that appeal to any sense or any combination of senses. • Examples: • “Drip of ruby teardropsto wake up where the green grass grows lips like cool sweet tea streaming through a velvet sky the stench of the underworld”
