  2. Content Area: Science • Grade Level: 1st grade • Summary: The purpose of this instructional Power point is to teach students about the different life cycles of plants and how they grow and change. • Learning Objective: Given information presented throughout the power point students will need to be able to recall facts and the order of a plant’s life cycle with 100% accuracy. • Content Standard: Grade 1: Standard 3- Flow of Matter and Energy; Matter and energy flow through the biosphere • Accomplishment: Describe what plants need in order to grow and remain healthy. • GLE 0107.3.1: Recognize that plants and animals are living things that grow and change over time.

  3. What is a Cycle? • A cycle is a sequence of events that repeat themselves. • Can you name any cycles?

  4. The Four Stages of The Plant Cycle • Seed • Germination • Mature Plant • Pollination

  5. Stage 1- Seed • The life cycle of a plant begins with a seed. • A small seed will need water, light, heat and minerals to grow and become a seedling which is apart of the germination stage.

  6. Let’s take a moment to think… With the person sitting next to you, write down what a seed needs to grow and why you may think those things are important!!

  7. Stage 2- Germination • The second stage is the germination stage. At this point the seed begins to sprout leaves and grow roots into the ground. • The seed has transformed into a tiny plant.

  8. Here’s an example of how a plant begins to grow from a seed http://kids.britannica.com/elementary/art-89944/A-bean-is-the-seed-of-a-bean-plant

  9. Stage 3- Mature Plant • In this stage, the plant is fully grown and most plants in the mature stage or adult stage produce flowers or fruits. • The plant is also ready to pollinate and this is preparation for the next stage.

  10. Stage 4- Pollination • The last stage is the pollination stage. This is where plants reproduce. The pollen has to reach the ovules of a plant to make seeds and start the life cycle all over again.

  11. Let’s watch a video to help better understand the stages of the plant life cycle and how plants pollinate. http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/plant_life_cycles/eng/Introduct/mains.htm

  12. Let’s take a quick quiz! http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/plant_life_cycles/eng/Introduct/mains.htm

  13. Let’s Review! • There are four stages to the plant life cycle, seed, germination, mature plant and pollination. • A plant starts out as a small seed, then begins germinating which produces a tiny plant. The tiny plant grows into a mature plant which pollinates and reproduces by producing seeds to start the cycle all over again.
