ALTIORA – “Strive for the Higher Things” A sk questions to identify your topic and information need • What is your topic? • What do you want/need to know about it? • Is there a particular question or aspect of your topic that you want to focus on? • What keywords will you use to search for information on your topic?

Other libraries? • Suggested Web sites? • Search engines? • Evaluate the source: • Who is the author - are they an expert? • When was the information published - is this Important? • Where does the information in the source come from? Can you verify the facts? • What’s the point of view? Is it biased, fact or opinion? • Should I use this source?

(i.e. index cards, electronically (OneNote, EasyBib, PowerPoint, Folders) • Focus when reading: • Highlight or copy important information • What is different from other sources? • What reinforces what you’ve already read? • Consider the purpose of your note-taking: • Quick facts? • Direct quotations? • Extended paraphrasing? • Be sure to match notes with source info for citing

ALTIORA – “Strive for the Higher Things” I dentify and record information about your sources • Properly citing sources prevents plagiarism, lends credibility to your work, and helps others find additional sources on your topic • Create a bibliography as you are using sources or at a minimum write down essential citation info for later use (i.e. author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, page numbers used; website url, title, date of use/download; etc.)

ALTIORA – “Strive for the Higher Things” O rganize your information to create an outline for your project • Organize the info that you found (main ideas and supporting facts/ideas that support the main ideas) • Reflect on what you have learned from your research and write a thesis statement • Use an outline (one recommended by your teacher or create your own) to structure your project and to show how the research supports your ideas

ALTIORA – “Strive for the Higher Things” R eview, research to fill information gaps, and create a draft • Review your outline : • Do your main points support your thesis? • Do you have sufficient information support for all of your main points? • Does your outline make sense, is it logical? • Perform additional research to fill any gaps • Create a draft of your final project

ALTIORA – “Strive for the Higher Things” A cknowledge all sources and complete all parts of the assignment • Review your draft, edit, revise, and insert any visuals if your project requires them (make sure you have permission to use the images!) • Acknowledge/cite all sources, including images • Review requirements and complete all parts of the assignment before the due date
