  2. Goal • To show how independent reading can be supported in both the ELA and reading support classroom.

Big questions • How many minutes per day should a SPPS student be reading if they want to see improvements? • How many books should a student read in one school year? • How much reading should be done in the classroom? • 2 minutes to write • 2 minutes to share with a partner • 2 minutes to share out

Sections from Schmoker/gallagher • Respond to the following readings with: • One quotation I agree with is __________________________________. • One quotation I question is ____________________________________. • One quotation I want to know more about is _________________________ because __________________________.

Independent reading in ela • Humboldt’s 10th Grade Independent Reading Program • 1000 pages per quarter • 60 minutes of reading per night • 3 Standards-based independent reading book projects per quarter • What is assessed? • Reading logs • IRB Projects • ELA days devoted to Independent reading • 3 out of 10 (approximately 54 days throughout a school year) • MAP Bounties • Fall 11 – 230 or higher means 1 less IRB Project that quarter

Opportunities for reading support • More Time to Read Independently • Guided Reading / Skills Taught • Information from Reading Teacher to English Teacher • data, skills taught, focus, etc. • Information from English Teacher to Reading Teacher • standards, assignments, texts, etc. • Goals Outside the Gradebook • MAP, SRI, Words / Pages / Books Read, etc.

Final statements • Assigning Doesn’t Mean Assessing • Goals Beyond the Gradebook / Standardized Test • Value Reading by Budgeting Time for Reading • If they read in, they’ll read out • Be Honest with Students • Let them know why, how, and what it will take • Recruit Parents / Guardians / Coaches / ISS / Librarians • Paul.richardson@spps.orgeric.swan@spps.org
