  1. Weather and Climate

  2. Monitoring Questions • What are the seasonal and annual status and trends in climate conditions at existing monitoring stations in and nearby the MOJN parks? • How do localized and regional trends in the climate vary with other MOJN vital signs? • Do these changes in climate warrant specific research or management actions to monitor or predict their effects on natural resources and other vital signs.

  3. Measurable Objectives • Report on status and trends. • Determine historic and long-term weather patterns and trends in order to detect changes. • Coordinate micro-scale weather monitoring efforts (i.e., install and maintain weather stations and snow gauges)

  4. Weather Stations: All except MANZ • In the procurement process • Original RFP – Campbell Scientific & other • Greg Kudray (PACN) is working to resolve before end of FY10 • Data uploaded via satellite; transferred to WRCC • Wind speed & direction, air temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation • Snow gauges: GRBA & PARA (?) • In MOJN conference room

  5. Site selection • Representative of the dominate conditions of interest • Long-term / unchanged exposure • Concerns • Dust • Surface moisture • Large reflective surfaces • Extensive black top • Large building, trees and vegetation • Distinct changes in topography

  6. Collaborators • Vicky Chang (JOTR) • Luke Sabala (JOTR) • Ben Roberts (GRBA) • Bryan Moore (LAKE) • Bill Bryson (MOJA) • PARA & DEVA ?

  7. PERSONNEL NEEDS • Physical / Bio Tech – Permanent • Spring 2011 • Coordinate and implement the installation of weather stations and snow gauges • Download and archive existing and new data (MOJN weather stations)

  8. TIME LINE • Restart Protocol development – Fall 2011 • Hire tech – Spring 2011 • Site Selection - Summer 2011 • Install - Summer 2011 • Online – Fall 2011

  9. COMPLIANCE • Site selection process will reveal specifics • Will work closely with parks.

  10. DATA MANAGEMENT • Needs to be considered and moved forward.

  11. Concerns & Questions & Discussion • Need to identify lead • Need to restart working group
