SYNESTHESIA One sense is described or associated with another (Numbers/letters are commonly associated with colors) • Seeing the icy river below, she began to shiver. • They pictured bright colors when they heard the fireworks thunder. • He could taste the cookies as the smell dispersed throughout the house.

  3. SYNTAX How an author formulates sentences and sentence structure Sentence structure version of diction (the means for an author to convey their view) • [Suspenseful with simple sentences] Thunder sounded. He stopped. Something was there. • [Describe vast land with compound/complex sentences] The cascading hills rolled down the green meadows of the pristine valley which streached beyond the horizon. • [Create effect of diary with run-on sentences] I went to the lake near the city limits the ducks were swimming a lot.

  4. THEME The message in a literary piece It can be stated or implied (“moral of the story”) • To Kill A Mockingbird illustrates the harmful effects of discrimination. • Hansel and Gretel warned against greed and strangers. • Green Eggs and Ham encourages individuals to try new things.

  5. THESIS A statement that expresses an author’s view or position The literary work is used to prove the author’s stance • The causes of the Revolutionary War were taxation, desire for representation, and nationalism. • The author of In Cold Blood believes that Holcomb is a run-down, uneventful city. • Through diction, King’s “I Have A Dream” speech express his wish for racial equality.

  6. TONE The author’sattitude/feelings about a subject Commonly expressed through diction Tone may be… -sarcastic/sardonic -aggitated -supportive -indifferent …as in…. The dreary days of mundane testing had finally ended. [the author believes that the testing is unnecessary and boring]
