James 4:13-17 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

  4. As we make plans, we should remember: • We don’t know what the future holds.

We don’t know the future. v. 13-14a Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. Proverbs 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow,For you do not know what a day may bring forth. Cf. Luke 12:19-20; Job 1-2, Ecclesiastes 9:11-12

  6. As we make plans, we should remember: • We don’t know what the future holds. • Life is short and uncertain.

  7. Life is short and uncertain. v. 14b For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Job 9:25-26 25 “Now my days are swifter than a runner;They flee away, they see no good.26 They pass by like swift ships,Like an eagle swooping on its prey. James 1:9-11, Psalm 39:4-6, Psalm 90:10-12

  8. As we make plans, we should remember: • We don’t know what the future holds. • Life is short and uncertain. • We should keep God and His will first.

God should come first. v. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” Acts 17:25 Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. Proverbs 19:21 There are many plans in a man’s heart,Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.

  10. God should come first. Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Matthew 6:33a But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,… Deuteronomy 29:29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. Cf. 1 Corinthians 2:16, 2 Timothy 2:15, 2 Corinthians 5:7, Romans 10:17

  11. As we make plans, we should remember: • We don’t know what the future holds. • Life is short and uncertain. • We should keep God and His will first. • Recognize our limits.

  12. We have limited control. v. 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. Matthew 5:36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. Isaiah 47:8-10

  13. As we make plans, we should remember: • We don’t know what the future holds. • Life is short and uncertain. • We should keep God and His will first. • Recognize our limits. • Obey God now.

  14. Obey today. v. 17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. 2 Corinthians 6:2b Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. Acts 24:25 Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, “Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.”

  15. Be Saved Today! • Believe – John 8:24 • Confess – Matthew 10:32-33 • Repent – Luke 13:3 • Be Baptized – Mark 16:16 • Be Faithful – Revelation 2:10
