3. Vocabulary • After every five chapters, I will define two vocabulary words from the list and use each one in a sentence.

4. Chapter 1 Setting / Draw it! A "setting" is where something is or where something happens. To describe the setting can also include the time of day, the moods of any people there, and any other details that would help you understand what is happening. Holes opens with a description of the setting of most of this story. Draw this setting. Be sure to include each thing on this list, and as many details from the chapter as you can find (be creative about showing what it is like there): *log cabin *hammock * "lake" ( "lake" is in quotation marks because something is called a lake, but it's not really a lake) *scorpions *rattlesnake *lizard *holes

5. Chapters 2 and 3 Make an inference for Camp Green Lake. What do you think it is going to like? After this, back your inference up with three statements from the novel. Make sure you include the page number. Remember, an inference is an educated guess based on clues provided in the story. Make an inference and support it.

6. Chapters 4-6 You can learn a lot from a quote by explaining it in four parts, called a "quote analysis:" 1) Using the provided quote for your group, write the quote and the page it comes from. Put it in quotation marks. 2) Explain who said those words, and to whom they were talking. 3) Paraphrase the quote. That means put it in different words that mean the same thing. Don't use quotation marks because quotation marks mean you are writing exactly the words that were said. 4) Explain what this quote tells you about this character or the plot of the story. What kind of person would say these things? Why would they say it? What would they have to know, or be thinking about, to say it?

7. Chapter 7 • Many books tell a story by starting at the beginning, telling you what happened, and ending at the end. Holes does not do this. We find out why Stanley is at Camp Green Lake after he gets there, and little by little, we find out more about what happened. Holes also has something called flashbacks. In the middle of the story, FLASH! We are zapped back in time, and we find out about things that happened a long time ago that are important to Stanley, even though he doesn't know it. We don't really know how they will be important -- but we can make inferences about them. Your job will be to complete the attached sheet explaining the flashback that happens in Chapter 7.

9. Chapters 8 and 9 • Inferences: • On page 44, we are introduced to a character named "Caveman." Who does Stanley infer that the Caveman is? • Why does he infer this? • On page 47, Stanley makes a different inference about who the Caveman is. Who is Caveman? • Why does he infer this?

10. Chapters 10-14-Partner Activity • With a partner, you will explain evidence of each type of conflict below up to this point in the novel. • Man vs Man • Man vs Nature • Man vs Himself • Man vs Technology • If you have not seen any evidence of this type of conflict in the novel so far, just provide a definition of that type of conflict.

11. Chapters 15-20 • Figurative Language: • Stanley's "heart had hardened as well" as his muscles. This doesn't mean his heart muscles are harder. It means he isn't going to go out of his way to be kind to people. What did Stanley say to Zero in chapter 18 that was a sign of a "hard" heart? • Conflict: • Draw it! • Chapters 19 and 20 have many conflicts. Choose one and draw an important scene from it. Include at least 4 details and explain what they mean.

12. Chapters 21-26 • In this activity, you will be working on character analysis. Using the sheet provided, complete the character analysis sheet for Sam Walker.

13. Chapters 27-30 • You will complete a learning log activity for chapters 27-30. This will include creating a new chapter title, identifying the setting, making a summarization, and asking a question.

14. Character development activity • Using materials provided, you will select eight of the ten characters provided below. For each character, you will do the following: • Write the name of the character, and draw a picture with color. (Hand drawn or computer generated) • Write a quote or action that shows the character’s personality. • Write a physical description of the character. (2 sentences) • Write a personality description of the character. Chapters 31-35 • Theme: Perseverance • Perseverance means continuing to try, even though what you're trying is hard, things get in the way, or it's discouraging, or all three. • 1) Why does Stanley need perseverance in these chapters? • Inferences: • 2)At the end of Chapter 34, Stanley sees a boat.What is its name? • 3)What else had that name many years ago? • 4)Who might have owned this boat?

16. Chapters 36-40 • Symbols • A symbol is something real that stands for an idea. In literature, a symbol is often a real, concrete thing (something you can actually see, like a boat) that stands for an abstract idea (like traveling or escaping) that the thing would make you think of. • A truck that is "like a rock" uses the rock as a symbol. The truck salespeople would like you to think of the way rocks last a long time when you think of their truck.
