  2. What constitutes ICT?ICT includes calculators as well as computers and extends to the whole range of audio-visual aids. Swansea LEA ICT Curriculum Team

  3. You might use: • a digital camera to take pictures of shapes found around the school • a CD-ROM to research data on the heights of mountains; • calculators to convert fractions into decimals; • audio tapes for learning counting and multiplication facts; • numberlines displayed on a large computer screen; • a television broadcast to focus on an aspect of mathematics; • a video recorder to record data over a period of time; • data-logging equipment to record changes in temperature ; • the internet to access up-to-date weather data.

  4. How can ICT improve the teaching of maths? ICT can make whole-class mathematics teaching: Easier Materials and resources can be quickly prepared, stored and retrieved. Work can be saved for later continuation or review. Work can be displayed or printed out at any stage and easily shared. Better The medium allows the presentation and flexible manipulation of resources. It engages pupil attention, enables differentiation and facilitates interaction. Different It allows the presentation of a wide range of resources (for example, websites), which may not be accessible in any other way. Swansea LEA ICT Curriculum Team

  5. How can web-based resources aid maths teaching? • Access to web-based resources can help teaching and • learning of mathematics in several ways, including: • exploring, describing and explaining number patterns; • practising and consolidating number skills; • exploring patterns in data; • estimating and comparing measures of distance, angle, time and so on; • experimenting with properties of shapes and geometric patterns; • developing mathematical vocabulary and problem-solving skills. 6. Common Requirements Within the National Curriculum, there are a number of skills and knowledge areas which can be applied to all subjects. These are known as Common Requirements. Teachers are obliged to teach IT skills across the curriculum. Swansea LEA ICT Curriculum Team

  7. Common Requirements for IT Skills in Mathematics Early Years and Key Stage 1 Pupils should be given opportunities to use calculators and computer software, including a database, both as a means of exploring number and as tools for calculating with realistic data, e.g. numbers with several digits. Pupils should be given opportunities to experience early ideas of position and movement through practical activity including the use of ICT devices, e.g. programmable toys, turtle graphics packages. 8. Common Requirements for IT Skills in Mathematics Key Stage 2 Pupils should be given opportunities to use calculators, computers and a range of other sources, as tools for exploring number structure and to enable work with realistic data. Pupils should be given opportunities to extend their understanding of position and movement using a wide range of materials, including the use of computer software, to create and transform shapes.
