  2. Quiz# 3 • 3y = 21 • 3x -5 = 22 • + 8 = 10 • 5x – 9 = 2x + 6 • - 3

  3. Vocabulary Coefficient- is a number in front of the variable. Ex: the coefficient of 4x is 4.

  4. Procedure: 3(2y +5) – 8y = 1 1) Remove parentheses (when applicable) 2) Combine like terms 3) Solve the equation 4) Check your variable.

  5. 3(2y +5) – 8y = 1

  6. 3m – (m + 1) = 6m + 1 Note: - (m+1) = -1(m +1)

  7. Practice • 5 – 3(x + 6) = x – 1 + 8x • 8x + 1 = 7x – 2(7+ x) • -(2x + 8 -5x) + 2 = x

  8. Answers • x = -1 • x = - 5 • X = 4

  9. Literal Equations Procedure: • Isolate the variable • Remove parentheses (where applicable) • Undo addition/subtraction • Undo multiplication/division

  10. Literal Equations Solve for x: 2x – 1 = 3 ax + b = 3

  11. Solve for w: 2L + 2w = 8
