Evening Agenda • 6:30-6:50- Students and Parents: Welcome and Introduction to Millwood • 6:50-8:00- Parents can leave and come back at 8 pm (or hang out and socialize in the gym) • Students will participate in a school tour and scavenger fact hunt. • 7:45-8:00 Students head to the main lobby, scavenger hunt sheet given back to their leader, sheet put into a draw for prizes. ICE CREAM SOCIAL!!!

Athletics at Millwood High School Mr. White- Athletics Director awhite@hrsb.ca • All Grade 9 students are eligible to compete on any team. • This is a great way to meet new people! • Fall sports tryouts like Football (August), Soccer, Volleyball, Golf, Hockey (September)- check the website/Millwood twitter account for dates/information. • Intramurals • Tues/Thurs- Organized Sports- Hockey, Basketball, Football • Mon/ Wed/ Fri- Open gym time

Clubs at Millwood High School • There are MANY clubs and groups that meet at lunch time or after school- something for EVERYONE! • This is a great way to meet new people. • A club/group information fair is held early in the year. • If there is a club/group students are interested in, but it isn’t currently run at MHS- TALK TO YOUR GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR or TEACHERS to get a club started!

Supporting your Child in High School • Stay in touch with the school by: • Checking PowerSchool • Attending curriculum night (check website in September/ February) • Parent Teacher night (November/ April) • Evening parent’s nights offered by Guidance Department • School Website/ Teacher Websites • School Messenger/ Emails • Please ensure your contact information is up to date on PowerSchool with SHJH • Sign on Sackville Drive • Twitter @MHSGuidance11 and @millwood_high • Stay in contact with your child’s teachers/ guidance counsellor • Encourage your student to get involved in sports, clubs, and/or groups. • Attend the Parents As Career Coaches session!

Academic and Personal Supports offered at Millwood High School • Academic and Personal Counselling through Guidance Department • Personal Counselling through Youth Health Centre • African NS and Aboriginal Student Support workers (Damon and Aiyden) • Student lunch and learn opportunities (student skills, academic supports, applying for post-secondary, etc.) • Resource support for students with Adaptations • MHS Library- with computers and various academic resources • Peer Tutoring (schedule available in September) • Teacher Extra Help (schedule available from individual teachers in September)

  14. Semesters and Timetable • Semester 1 September - January • Semester 2 February – June • Currently: • 4 day cycle with 4 – 75min Periods 1,2,3,4 Grade 9 students have the same PD and assessment days as the grade 10, 11, and 12 students.

  15. English Program: • English 9- All year • Math 9- All year • Phys-ed- All year every other day. • Science/ Social Studies- One semester per course • French 9- One semester every second day • Elective Courses- Two electives completed in one semester

French Immersion Program • French Language Arts- All year* • Math 9- All year* • Science/ Social Studies- One semester per course* • Phys-ed- All year every other day • English 9- One semester every second day • Elective Courses- Two electives completed in one semester. • * Indicates course is offered in French

Elective Courses • Non-Band Students will have two of the following electives: Exploring Music Visual Arts 9 Tech Ed. 9 They will receive two elective courses chosen randomly to balance classes. • Band Students will only have BAND as their elective. Electives run for 8 weeks in quarter 1 and quarter 2.

Other Things to Know… First Day of School: • Check the MHS website and Twitter for updates and information • Students should have a schedule printed from PowerSchool- We will not have copies printed for students. PLEASE ENSURE STUDENTS KNOW THEIR POWERSCHOOL LOGIN INFORMATION BEFORE LEAVING GRADE 8. • Bring your Student Fees- Amount will be posted on MHS website • Bring pens/ pencils and paper. Teachers will let you know if they require specific supplies on first day of school. • The first day of school is TBD
