  3. Problems of Mao’s Rule • Wanted to improve China’s economy, but cannot • Policies lack modern technology & prevent economic growth • Cultural Revolution of 1960s turned people against communism

  4. China and the West • 1971—China opens up & starts closer relations with the U.S. • 1976—Mao dies & moderates take control of Communist Party • Deng Xiaoping—leader by 1980 • Four Modernizations—Deng’s plan for economic progress • Agriculture, defense, industry, & science/technology • Policy reverses Mao’s strict Communist policies

  5. Tiananmen Square Massacre • Reforms lead to some unrest over privileges of Communist leaders • 1989—students protest in Tiananmen Square and demand democracy • Deng orders army to surround & attack protestors • Leaves hundreds dead and thousands wounded

  6. China Enters the New Millennium • 1997—Britain gives Hong Kong back to China • More reform under new leaders: Jiang Zemin & Zhu Rongji • Economic reforms reduce poverty • China has fast growing economy & is involved with many countries worldwide
