Earlylife • Manoel Cândido Pinto de Oliveira was born in Porto on December 11, 1908 • He attended school in Galicia, Spain, when his goal was to become an actor • At age 20 he enrolled in an acting school but the documentary Berlin: Symphony of a City changed his mind and his life.
Career • He direct his first film, a documentary, titled Douro, Faina Fluvial in 1931 • He acquired some technical training in the Kodak’s studios in Germany • In 1933 he participated as an actor in the second Portuguese sound film, The Song of Lisbon
His first feature film came in 1942, Aniki-Bóbó. The film was a commercial failure. • Oliveira decided to to dedicate himself to his family vineyardand only return to cinema after 14 years with The Painter and the City in 1956.
In 1964 he directed A Caçathat was a targetoftheportuguesecensorship • He is a teacher at Academia de Cinema de Skopje • he directs films just for pleasure, regardless of critical reaction. He maintains a quiet life away from the spotlights.
