  4. Buddhism • Founded by Siddhartha Gautama in India • Teaches wisdom of the Middle Path • Desire leads to suffering • Escaping suffering leads to nirvana

  5. Buddhism • Cycle of rebirth (samsara) • Good deeds and intentions create karma that leads to improved rebirths • Cycle of rebirths lasts eons (kalpa)

  6. Buddhism • When some escape cycle of rebirth, they choose to help others escape rather than reaching nirvana • Called boddhisattvas • People can pray to them for guidance • Often subjects of iconography

  7. Buddhism • Japan primarily practices Pure Land Buddhism • Primary buddha is Amitābha, a bodhisattva who attained enlightenment • Calling Amitābha’s name can bring you to paradise (gokuraku, 極楽)
