  1. Like the Ripple Effect created by a pebble in a pond, the ‘ripple effect’ of alcohol is thought to go far beyond the individual and their immediate family

  2. North East Glasgow • Population is 177, 649. Average life expectancy for males is 68.5 years • 2005-2009 there were 776 alcohol related deaths in North East Glasgow, 89% above Scottish average. • North East Glasgow has highest admissions and death rates relating to alcohol in Glasgow • From 2007-09 there were 9354 alcohol related & attributable hospital admissions in North East, 56% above Scottish average.

Ripple EffectPhase 1 • Commissioned 2008 by Glasgow Community Safety Services • Consulted with people living in all areas of the city • Showed that 99% of people felt that alcohol affected their community is some way • 79% felt that alcohol affected their community in a medium – large way • Negative affects of alcohol accounted for 95% of the responses

  4. Ripple Effect Phase 2 • Pilot in North East Glasgow, financed by HI & GCSS & GCA • Recruitment of Addiction Community Engagers (ACEs) • c.2000+ people took part in the consultation between March 2010 & March 2011 • Wider Interagency Collaboration • Youth Consultation

We are a group of local people, whose aim is to engage with our communities and in partnership with the right agencies try and find solutions to the damaging effects that alcohol misuse has on all our lives” ACE Mission Statement

Off Sales • Partnership GCSS, Strathclyde Police, NHS, Licensing Standards & GCA • Targeted Ripple Effect Areas • Involved working with Licence holders and local youth providers • In Shettleston • 14% Reduction in ASB alcohol related incidents • 47% Reduction in ASB alcohol related crime • 3563 Litres of alcohol seized from (June 2010 – April 2011)
