  1. STANDARDS FOR LITERACY IN SOCIAL STUDIES & SCIENCE

  2. The world we live in continues to change…For students to succeed in school, work, and the community, they will require more skills and knowledge than ever before… To ensure all students have every opportunity to succeed, Oklahoma adopted the Common Core Standards in Math, Language Arts, and Literacy for Social Studies and Science.

  3. Adopted by the State of Oklahoma, Summer, 2010

  4. Why is this important? Currently, every state has its own set of academic standards, meaning students in each state are learning to different levels and expectations… All students must be prepared to compete with not only their American peers in the next state, but with students from around the world.

  5. What are the Common Core Standards? • Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through reading and writing skills • Based on evidence and research • State-led initiative by the Chiefs of State Schools and National Governors Association

  6. LITERACY: Share Responsibility • Literacy instruction (reading & writing) is a shared responsibility, based on the philosophy that teachers in the content areas can and should use their expertise in their disciplines to help students meet challenges of reading and writing in their respective fields. • Literacy standards are meant to complement, rather than supplant content standards for social studies and science.

  7. How are the Common Core State Standards Different from Current State Standards? 1. Higher (rigor) 2. Clearer (specific expectations) 3. Measured Differently A. reading and writing standards emphasizedfor Science and Social Studies B. measured by multiple choice AND open-ended, free-response reading and writing state Language Arts assessments (impacting Okla. state Social Studies & Science annual assessments?)

  8. LITERACY: Design and Organization Two strands: Reading Writing An integrated model of literacy (Media requirements blended throughout)

  9. Social Studies & Science Implementation Plans, 2011-2012 • Professional Development Opportunities: “Reading Strategies Common Core Standards” • Implement Reading Common Core in all SS & Science classrooms, 2011-2012 • Correlate & Develop District Benchmark Items to Common Core Reading in SS Standards • Curriculum Mapping of Current Writing Practices, Grades 6-12
