Solving Equations

Solving Equations. An Easy One…. If we are given a problem such as… y + 8 = 11 we can easily figure out that the y must be equal to 3 because 3 + 8 = 11. But What If…. we are given a problem such as… g + 216 = 543 What would you do?. Let’s go back to…. Y + 8 = 11.

  1. Solving Equations

  2. An Easy One… If we are given a problem such as… y + 8 = 11 we can easily figure out that the y must be equal to 3 because 3 + 8 = 11

  3. But What If… we are given a problem such as… g + 216 = 543 What would you do?

  4. Let’s go back to… Y + 8 = 11

  5. Addition Problems If we are looking at an addition problem then we need to subtract the same value from each side of the equation. For example… p + 54 = 124.

  6. Subtraction Problems If we are looking at a subtraction problem then we need to addthe same value to each side of the equation. For example… w – 87 = 624

  7. Let’s Try Some Examples! h – 6 = 12 Don’t forget to make sure your answer is valid!

  8. Let’s Try Some Examples! j + 21 = 49 Don’t forget to make sure your answer is valid!

  9. Let’s Try Some Examples! 32 + d = 56 Don’t forget to make sure your answer is valid!

  10. Let’s Try Some Examples! b – 24 = 8 Don’t forget to make sure your answer is valid!

  11. So Now What? We have now “undone” addition and subtraction problems by using the inverse (opposite) operation. But what would happen if we had… 5q = 35

  12. Multiplication Problems If we are looking at a multiplication problem then we need to divide by the same value on each side of the equation.

  13. Let’s go back to… 5q = 35

  14. Let’s Try An Example! 8k = 96 Don’t forget to make sure your answer is valid!

  15. Let’s Try Another Example! 25v = 300 Don’t forget to make sure your answer is valid!

  16. Division Problems If we are looking at a division problem then we need to multiply by the same value on each side of the equation. For example… d ÷ 6 = 6

  17. Let’s Try An Example! Don’t forget to make sure your answer is valid!

  18. Let’s Try Another Example! Don’t forget to make sure your answer is valid!

  19. Let’s Try Another Example! 7c = 112 Don’t forget to make sure your answer is valid!

  20. Let’s Try Another Example! 52 + q = 98 Don’t forget to make sure your answer is valid!

  21. Let’s Try Another Example! u – 21.9 = 78.02 Don’t forget to make sure your answer is valid!
