  2. Family Life • Born on May 22, 1813 in Leipzig, Germany • Youngest of 8 siblings • Father: Friedrich Wagner, police officer • Father died shortly after Richard’s birth • Mother: Johanna Rosine • Mother remarried to Ludwig Geyer in 1814

  3. Personal Info • Loved to play piano • Idols: Shakespeare and Ludwig van Beethoven • Wrote first opera when he was 8 • Against Jewish composers/musicians

  4. Achievements • Hitler admired Wagner • Wrote own music • Composed 14 operas • Was 1st music director in theater in Riga, Russia 1837 • Music is still famous now

  5. Compositions • First composition: “Die Feen” (The Fairies) in 1833 • Final drama, “Parsifal” completed in 1882 • Biggest set of shows: “Ring” cycle (which included) “Rheirgold”, “Walkure”, “Siegfried”, and “Gotterdammerung”

  8. Last Years • Married Minna Planer, singer-actress in 1836, had no children • Second Wife: Cosima von Bulow, married 1870 • Had 3 children with Cosima: Isolde, Eva, Siegfried • Died: Feb. 13, 1883 in Venice, Italy • Died at age 70 from heart disease • Was buried at Bayreuth
