  7. What does Plot do? • Plot is what drives characters through-out the story. It forces them to make decisions they might not otherwise face and helps them to achieve their goals or gain new understanding. • PLOT DRIVES THE CHANGE IN CHARACTERS! • Plot also keeps us, the readers, interested. A fast paced plot, or a plot that builds tension within us, keeps us coming back.

  8. Simple or Complex? • A simple plot is straight forward. You are introduced to the character, the character faces a conflict, the character overcomes(sometimes) the conflict, the story resolves.

  9. Simple or Complex? • There are times, however, when a plot can become quite complex full of subplots and background. • Some complicated plots are • The ‘group’ protagonist • Present and past • The grand scale story • Grand scale theme • Etc. • Does To Kill a Mockingbird have a complex or simple plot?

  10. Breaking down the Plot of TKAM The plot of TKAM is slightly more complex than the plots of many stories. It begins with a story of childhood curiosity, friendship and adventure and evolves into a more serious story about justice and racial prejudice. So how does Harper Lee pull this off? Let’s map it out.

  11. Group Work • Look back over the novel and pick out five or more of the most important events. Then, we will create a plot map.

  12. Changing the Plot What do you think would happen if the plot of this story were changed? Write a one page essay in which Tom Robinson is acquitted and released. Then answer the following questions. • Does this change make the novel more powerful or less powerful? Why? • Does this change also change the overall tone of the novel? • Might it have made Bob Ewell’s attack more vicious? Why or why not? • What might have become of Tom Robinson? Would he have been able to live in peace after the trial? Would he have been murdered?

  13. Independent Practice • Read chapters 24-27. • Finish your Changing the Plot essay
