  1. Good Afternoon! Today we will be learning about Fractions, decimals, percents Let’s warm up : Convert the following Improper fractions to Mixed Numbers: 1) 17 12 2) 28 9 2) 1 9 1) 5 12 3 1 Convert the following Mixed Numbers to Improper fractions : 3) 3 5 3) 38 5 4) 4 9 4) 22 9 7 2 CONFIDENTIAL

  2. Let’s review what we did in the last session We learnt the following terms: IMPROPER FRACTIONS: An improper fraction is just a fraction where the numerator (the top number) is greater than or equal to the denominator (the bottom number). Example: 7 4 Let’s demonstrate this with a model: 7 4 CONFIDENTIAL

  3. Review MIXED FRACTIONS : A mixed number has a part that is a whole number and a part that is a Proper fraction. Example: 3 4 1 Let’s demonstrate this with a model: 3 4 1 CONFIDENTIAL

  4. Review Convert Improper fractions to Mixed Numbers You can convert an improper fraction into a mixed fraction and vice-versa to show the same amount. To convert from an improper fraction to a mixed number, the following steps are to be followed: STEP 1: Divide the numerator by the denominator. STEP 2: Write down the whole number (quotient). STEP 3: Place the remainder over the denominator. CONFIDENTIAL

  5. Review 7 4 Change fraction to a mixed number 1 STEP 1: ) Divide the numerator by the denominator. 4 7 4 3 STEP 2: 1 quotient Write down the whole number (quotient). 3 remainder STEP 3: Place the remainder over the denominator. 3 4 1 This is the required mixed fraction CONFIDENTIAL

  6. Review Convert Mixed Numbers to Improper fractions To convert from a mixed number to an improper fraction, the following steps are to be followed: STEP 1: Take the mixed number and multiply the denominator by the whole number STEP 2: Then add the numerator to that answer. STEP 3: Put your new number over the denominator. STEP 4: The denominator just stays the same. CONFIDENTIAL

  7. Review 3 4 2 Convert to a mixed number. STEP 1: Take the mixed number and multiply the denominator by the whole number. 4 x 2 = 8 denominator whole number CONFIDENTIAL

  8. Review STEP 2: 8 + 3 = 11 Then add the numerator to that answer. numerator STEP 3: 11 4 Put your new number over the denominator. The denominator stays the same. Hence, this is the required mixed fraction. CONFIDENTIAL

  9. Today we will discuss the relation between Fractions, decimals, percents • Fraction: is a number that names part of a whole or part of a group. The numerator (the top) is the PART, the denominator (the bottom) is the WHOLE. • Decimal: A number that uses place value and a decimal point to show tenths, hundredths and the thousandths. • Percent:is based on the number in terms of 100. "Percent" is actually "per cent", meaning "out of a hundred". Example: 1 = 0.25 = 25% 4 Fraction Percent Decimal CONFIDENTIAL

  10. Converting Between Fraction to Decimal The given Fraction is 1 4 STEP 1: ) Divide the denominator into the numerator. 1 4 STEP 2: 0.25 ) Place a decimal point after the number inside the division "box" and attach as many zeros as necessary to handle the division. 1.00 4 - 8 20 - 20 00 STEP 3: 1 = 0.25 4 If the quotient does not come out evenly, follow any rounding instructions. Hence, the value. CONFIDENTIAL

  11. Converting Between Decimal to Percent The given decimal number is 0.25. STEP 1: Multiply the decimal number by 100. 0.25 x 100 STEP 2: Move the decimal point two places to the right. attach a percent sign. 0.25 = 25% Hence, the value. CONFIDENTIAL

  12. Converting Between Percent to Decimal The given Percentage is 25%. STEP 1: 0.25 ) Divide the percentage number by 100. 25 100 STEP 2: 25% = 0.25 Move the decimal point two places to the left. Hence, the value. CONFIDENTIAL

  13. Converting Between Percent to Fraction The given Percentage is 25%. STEP 1: 25% = 25 100 Place the number in the percent over 100. STEP 2: 25% = 1 4 Reduce. Hence, the value. CONFIDENTIAL

  14. Converting Between Fraction to Percent The given Fraction is 1 4 STEP 1: 1 x 100 4 Multiply the fraction by 100. STEP 2: 1 = 25% 4 Reduce, and attach a percent sign. Hence, the value. CONFIDENTIAL

  15. Converting Between Decimal to Fraction The given decimal number is 0.25. STEP 1: Count the decimal places of the decimal starting from the decimal point. 0.25 STEP 2: If there is one decimal place, place the number over 10 and reduce. Or/else If there are two decimal places, place the number over 100 and reduce. 25 = 1 100 4 Hence, the value. CONFIDENTIAL
