  1. GERDAcupuncture Treatments Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a health issue which involves the tissue between the esophagus and the stomach. Specifically the area where the problem occurs is the muscle between the two organs. GERD is a more serious form of gastroesophageal reflux or GER. There are many names to the latter, including heartburn. GER (reflux) can come and go, or may be temporary, but GERD (disease) is generally a condition that lasts a lifetime. People with chronic heartburn frequently experience symptoms every day or have to be treated periodically to keep the condition at bay.
