  8. Political segregation reinforced by society and enshrined in law in the US South African apartheid

  9. Geographical segregation Modern-day Chicago

  10. Is the UK a multicultural society???

  11. Alternative ways of looking at multiculturalism Read the following extract… http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4223322.stm Is Wembley multicultural? Why do you think this? Create your own definition of multiculturalism. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JI0AveK414c – “This Week in Politics”.

  12. Liberal definition • multiculturalism is a society “at ease with the rich tapestry of human life and the desire amongst people to express their own identity in the manner they see fit”.

  13. Measuring integration Results for all 31 Sweden (83) Portugal (79) Canada (72) Finland (69) Netherlands (68) Belgium (67) Norway (66) Spain (63) USA (62) Italy (60) Luxembourg (59) Germany (57) United Kingdom (57) Denmark (53)France (51)Greece (49)Ireland (49)Slovenia (49)Czech Republic (46)Estonia (46)Hungary (45)Romania (45)Switzerland (43)Austria (42)Poland (42)Bulgaria (41)Lithuania (40)Malta (37)Slovakia (36)Cyprus (35)Latvia (31) Source: How do you think we arrive at these figures???

  14. So… there are 7 aspects which are looked at, but can you think of reasonswhy each country differs in terms of its rankings?

  15. Even relatively tolerant countries struggle… Romanians in Spain form the largest group of foreigners in the country, having surpassed Moroccans in 2007.[1] As of 2009they made up 14.2% of Spain's total foreign population of 5,598,691 people. Most of the is for economic reasons, as many Romanians from rural and underdeveloped areas are attracted by the higher wages of Spain, the linguistic similarities between Romanian and Spanish, as well as Romanians' Latin identity are also a reason for the country's attractiveness.

  16. Where Romanians typically migrate. Why do they go???

  17. The impact of Romanian accession - 2007 In September 2012 there were 900,000 Romanians living in Spain.

  18. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8jNM5kc10M (to 6 minutes) – What has Spain now done and why? What are the implications? Why do you think that tolerance for Romanians is changing?

  19. Case study 2 – the UK – Recent Trends

  20. Polish Migrants – to UK

  21. Visits of less than 12 months Looking at all of the available evidence, what do you think main reason for visiting might be?

  22. The BBC had a programme “The Poles are Coming” as part of their White Season in 2008. This series looked at migration and tried to identify the extent to which our society is tolerant to migrants. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVP0RRvl2WE Why have these new members of the EU come to places like Peterborough and Slough. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPuwpNddPzU – Don’t wanna work in like no cornfield innit. Na. ‘fer to sign on innit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGugrcgv_B8 – Peterborough, strangely attractive.

  23. Benefits • …..Choice. Can you think of any other benefits?

  24. Problems

  25. Can be used to make political points…

  26. Societal problems at the margins where wealth meets poverty…

  27. Conclusion? • We live in an increasingly globalised world. This is reflected in the ethnic breakdown of the UK. • Some areas are statistically more diverse than others – e.g. Newham and Wembley. • Multiculturalism means more than this to some people – is society truly mixed and integrated? • Is tolerance all that we can hope for?
