  10. #3 The Cat in The Hat My book, The Cat in the Hat came about as a result of a challenge. In May of 1954 Life magazine published an article that criticized the books being used to teach children how to read. He claimed they were boring and didn’t inspire kids to want to read any more than they had to. This article led to a challenge by Houghton Mifflin’s educational director. He challenged Dr. Seuss to “write a story that first-graders can’t put down”…but there was a catch. The book needed to be limited to the couple hundred words that were selected from a first grade vocabulary list. Dr. Seuss took the challenge. He ended up writing a book with 236 words. The book took him 9 months. He struggled to come up with an idea for a book using such basic words while still keeping it interesting. As he began to plan the story, his original idea was about a king and queen cat, but queen was not on the list of words. He claims that he only ended up writing The Cat in the Hat because cat and hat were the first two words on the list that rhymed!
