  2. Definition of Disability A disabled person is one who suffers from any one of the following three types: • Impairment • Disability or activity limitation • Handicap or participation limitation WHO (2001)

  4. Disadvantaged People are disadvantaged not by their impairments, but as a result of the limitation Imposed on them by attitudinal, social, cultural, economic and environmental barriers to their participation in society.

Rehabilitation • Early Detection, diagnosis and intervention • Medical care and treatment • Social psychological and other types of counseling and assistance. • Training in self care activities, including mobility, communication and daily living skill, with special provisions as need e.g. for the hearing impaired, the visually impaired and the mentally retarded.

  9. Scenario of disability in India Government figure – 2001 census 21 million disabled people (2.1% of total population) in India. Ministry of Social Welfare 1.9% of total population in India. U.N Manual indicates 6% of total population in India. National Survey sample organization claims 5% in India. “Front Line”, January 16,2009 claims 10% of total population (over 100 million).

  13. Vision of SINAM • Reduction of the gap between rich and poor with social justice and establishment of the harmonious society where the people are free from poverty, hunger, diseases and injustice. People are the subjects and partners in development.

  14. Mission of SINAM To develop the oppressed and down trodden community through their own full participation and social action programme for the achievement of their livelihood, social security human rights, gender equity and solidarity for their sustainable development.

  15. Objectives of SINAM “SINAM is a Non-profit making secular charitable Organisation, working for the empowerment of the rural need community” The objectives of SINAM are given below • 1. To promote rural women by way of offering education organizing them selves as small groups and skill training with the support of various agencies. • 2. To improve and expand employment opportunities for the rural landless with a view to provide guarantee of employment for at least one member of every landless household upto 200 days in a year.

  16. 3. To plan and implement programmes for the differently- abled people including rehabilitation, Treatment and providing Vocational Training. • 4. To provide development/welfare assistance to the rural poor people with the support of Government, Non-Government agencies and overseas donor agencies. • 5. To organize activities related to Bio-diversity, ecology, environment, health, sanitation, national integration, constitutional rights and duties minority rights, human and consumers rights. • 6. To support and supplement and the efforts of community in developing income generation activities, savings and credit programmes and provide marketing support services.

  17. Major activities of SINAM Over the years, various programmes had been carried out in Tiruvannamalai District. Some of the major activities carried out are as follows:- • Provided Non-formal education to 625 Dalit children for 25 centres. • Evening coaching classes to 450 children at 30 centres. • Enabled 385 aged persons to get old age pension. • Implemented 15 Bore wells for drinking water. • Helped to receive house sites for 1216 homeless people.

Conducted many health camps, eye camps, dental camps and herbal health camps. • Disability awareness camps. • Vocational training for the disabled. • Rehabilitation of differently- abled. • Placement services to the differently- abled people. • Organic cultivation. • Programmes for small farmers/marginal farmers.

Dry land cultivation for food security. • HIV/AIDS Awareness programmes. • Distribution of free books/note books to poor children, every year. • Women’s self help groups (around 550 SHGs for women and 52 SHGs for youth). • Skill training for women (Tailoring) • Capacity development programmes for Dalits. • Childrens development programmed / children’s garden.

Problems Faced by Differently- Abled in SINAM Project Area • Geographically scattered location of their residences • Disinterest to learn vocational skills • Lack of participation in Training • Higher drop out rate during training • Difficulties in traveling • Lack of compensation during training period (stipend) • Accompanying people (care taker) • Disinterested parents / care taker on the rehabilitation of disabled.

  24. Inability to get paid employment soon after getting training. • Social isolation • Neglected by the society / employers. • Problems in getting Government Identity card for the physically handicapped • Demanding bribe by Doctors for issuing certificate indicating more than 40% disability. • Lack of interest of Bank Managers to sanction loan for self employment. • Lack of assets to show the repayment capacity of the loan from banks / credit institution.
