A San Francisco avviene l'incontro tra due brutti, Tillie e Pete, i loro diffidenti approcci, il matrimonio. Con l'annuncio dell'inesorabile linfogranuloma che li priverà dell'unico figlio, Tillie entra in crisi... La sceneggiatura è tratta dal romanzo Latte di strega di Peter De Vries ed è firmata dal veterano Julius J. Epstein. Il film appartiene più a lui che a Ritt che s'è limitato a metterlo in immagini con greve zelo. Prima brioso, poi melodrammatico, ha un finale raccontato con pudore e tenerezza.
