  1. Weathering and Erosion Chapter 3: Introduction

  2. 8 main terms to learn Weathering Erosion Denudation Mechanical weathering Chemical weathering Transport Deposition Agents of weathering

  3. Weathering The breaking down of rocks that lie exposed to the weather.

  4. Erosion The breaking down and movement of rock pieces by water, ice and air.

  5. Denudation/Denuded Rocks are WORN DOWN by the weather.

  6. Mechanical weathering Mechanical weathering is the breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces usually by frost, the temperature changing or the movement of plants or animals.

  7. Chemical Weathering Rocks are chemically changed or decomposed by the rain.

  8. Transport The movement of the broken pieces of rock by wind, ice or water.

  9. Deposition The broken pieces of rock are dropped in other areas.

  10. Agents of weathering

  11. Agents of weathering • Agents of weathering are things that cause rocks to break down: • Frost • Temperature changes • Plants • Animals • Rain
