Settled in 1586 by Sir Walter Raleigh • 107 men sent to “set it up” • Second ship with supplies arrived late with 115 men, women and children • John White selected as Governor • 1st English person born in the new world • Baby girl named Virginia Dare
White returned to England for supplies • His ship was taken to fight against the Spanish Armada in the war with Spain • 1590 – White returns to Roanoke to find it abandoned.
