Ibm la grid student scholars program please be a mentor

IBM LA Grid Student Scholars Program – Please be a Mentor

Mission

  • We want to engage every student in a mentoring program. Some of them have never participated in a mentoring program. Others might not be as committed. Therefore, we need to go the extra mile, and we want to make sure we can make it the best experience possible for them.

Goals For the Mentors

  • To make a difference! This is an opportunity to make a difference with these students (some of them have never done mentoring)

  • Be fully committed to the mentoring relationship, making time and take the lead towards eventually sharing ownership

  • Offer career guidance and share successes and challenges.

  • Explain the importance and excitement of technology careers in the minority groups

  • Provide feedback and coaching

  • Be a role model!!!

Commitment

  • At least one communication per month (phone preferably – think “personal touch”)

  • Be aware off, and communicate, key program messages and objectives (attend periodic team calls and/or listen to replay)

  • Provide brief documented feedback for each mentoring encounter

  • Give overall program feedback to LA Grid Student Scholars Mentoring Lead

IBM LA Grid Student Scholars Program – Mentoring

General Hints and Tips for the Mentor/Protégé Relationship (cont.)

  • Provide constructive feedback.... specific, honest, and timely. Consider where you are, where you are going, and what you’ve accomplished. Be prepared to change directions if necessary and be sure to ask for any help if needed.

  • Both mentor and Protégé need to:

    • Drive success and bring high enthusiasm

    • Facilitate dialog and learning through various means

    • Stick to a meeting schedule

  • Develop, update, and keep to the roadmap; it will add structure while discovering common ground through which to get to know each other

  • Record your meetings. Main points discussed ? Main issues/challenges encountered ? Feedback points provided ? Actions to be taken?
