Because Science and Religion are totally different, science never bothers about religious problems (God, meaning of life etc), and Religion never bothers about scientific problems – what the world is made of, how does it work. So how can you get disagreements between science and religion about anything? What if a scientist thought he could do an experiment to prove God? Or to prove the meaning of life? What if a religious person thought he could discover science through reading the Bible?

  2. Galileo Galilei was a Catholic 1560’s -1650. He was educated in a Catholic monastery, by monks, before going on to University. One of his daughters became a nun. He became a great scientist, and was never afraid to disagree with other people’s ideas.   3. Explain what Galileo’s theory was – compared to what people believe before. Why did people think he was wrong? Explain several reasons. Include a bible quote in your answer. Why do you think the Church might not have been willing to believe him? **Do you think the Church’s reluctance to believe Galileo was because the Church was against science? Famous philosophers like Aristotle, whom everybody believed about everything, most astronomers of the day, and the Bible all said that the earth was fixed at the centre of the universe - and all the other planets went round the earth. “The LORD fixed the earth firmly in its place, it can never be moved”. Ps 104 “Joshua said to the sun “Sun, stand still”. And the sun stood still.” Josh 10:12 Galileo didn’t really have any correct proof of his theory either (powerful telescopes had not yet been invented) but he believed it all the same…

Galileo was accused of being a heretic: someone who deliberately goes against the teachings of the Church – because the Bible clearly said that the sun went round the earth, and he disagreed.Copernicus – a polish astronomer - had already suggested Galileo’s theory 30 years earlier, but nobody took any notice –only during Galileo’s time was the Church so worried about people changing what the Bible said, that it made a fuss. This is because a group of Christians called Protestants were rebelling against the Church, saying they could decide for themselves what the Bible meant. The Church wanted to stamp them out. So Galileo was warned that unless he stopped speaking out about his theory, he could be burnt at the stake as one of these Protestant heretics. • Explain if this shows that the Church was against science or was it worried about other issues more? • Draw a cartoon strip to show: • Galileo stating what his theory is • The Church explaining why it can’t accept this theory: include the Bible quote. • The Church telling Galileo that he must stop spreading his (unproved) theory • Galileo agrees to keep quiet, and to be under house arrest for the rest of his life. • 150 years later, when there is proof of his theory, the Church admits he was right, and apologises. • **Does this extra information about how the Church was really trying to weed out Protestants change your opinion that this was an issue between science and religion?
