Research and Issues in Maintenance and Preservation of Infrastructure

Presented to Pooled Fund

April 19, 2012

Lisa Loyo

Manager, Information Services

Transportation Research Board

What are we discussing
What are we discussing? Infrastructure

  • • Infrastructure (pavement and bridges) preservation and maintenance

  • How do we decide when to preserve or maintain a road or a bridge or build something new?

    • Not the same as historic preservation

    • Similar questions and decisions as for equipment management – when do you replace versus repair?

  • Other definitions or comments ?

Perspective
Perspective Infrastructure

  • Consider the entire state – projects often are distributed by region rather than based on ROI

  • Look at infrastructure as an entire network, and not individual projects
