GEND 3057 Selected Topics "Kadoorie Hong Kong Placement” -3-credit course -taught by Dr. Renshaw at the Kadoorie Centre in Hong Kong Course Description: -experience hands-on wildlife conservation efforts in a Non-Western context -exposed to local and indigenous animal conservation projects & international trafficking of exotic species -explore “saving” animals: advocacy, protection, power, political issues, legal and ethical challenges of activism, differing cultural perspectives -present developing research to staff of Kadoorie and SPCA -exchange knowledge with Hong Kong U and Nipissing U students -a “real world” experience International Initiatives Office www.nipissingu.ca/international

DESTINATION Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG): http://www.kfbg.org/kfb/text2image2.xml?fid=163 -over 148 hectares of land on the northern slopes and foothills of Hong Kong's highest mountain - Tai Mo Shan. -established in 1956 to provide agricultural aid to farmers in need of support to help them lead independent lives. -today, promoting the conservation of biodiversity in Hong Kong and South China, sustainable agriculture and creative nature education Fauna Conservation Department Focus: 1. NU Risk Management Protocol-Requires documents: Waiver of Liability, Participation Agreement, Medical Disclosure and Treatment -Risk Assessment and Emergency Planning form-DFATD travel advisories, and Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA) -Guardme Completely Canada Emergency Health insurance (+trip cancellation, baggage) Health-Kadoorie Application Documents, Waiver and Medical History forms -North Bay & Parry Sound District Health Unit -inoculations and medications obtained from March onwards, + prescriptions Payments - Your flights and Kadoorie costs will be made in 2 or 3 payments to Nipissing University Student Finance Department (in person via cash, cheque or debit card, or on-line automatic bank payment- Additional costs paid at time of purchase: e.g. transportation to and from Toronto airport, Chinese visa obtained in advance, and insurance once flight tickets are purchased (as instructed by NU) International Initiatives Office www.nipissingu.ca/international

COSTS: KADOORIE - HONG KONG approx. $2000.00 CAD (tbc) -Based at: (these details are yet to be finalized) – Hong Kong University Kadoorie Centre --Accommodation – double room accommodation -Food (3 meals, snacks, beverages including bottled water); -24 hour security -Kadoorie Facilitators -Pre- and post-trip coordination, development of leadership and social issues curricula and in-country program setup -Plus flight costs ($1900 approx., subject to change until tickets issued) International Initiatives Office www.nipissingu.ca/international

KEY DATES – for selected students • Dec 2 - confirmed student groups meet with Faculty Facilitator, Sal Renshaw • - submit your passport photo page (must be identifiable) • Dec 6 - deposit of $500 CAD per person for flights to Hong Kong (tbc) (payment to Nipissing University Student Finance Department may be made in person via cash, cheque or debit card, or on-line automatic bank payment) • 2014 • Jan 6 - remaining balance of flight & trip fees (tbc, possibly become 2 payments) • (same payment options as noted above) • Mar 7 - attend compulsory Pre-departure Session with Immunization Information • Mar 7 - begin process of required inoculations specific to your destination • (completed by April 30th) • Mar 31 - submit all required documents to Sal Renshaw International Initiatives Office www.nipissingu.ca/international
