Answer to question #1 • Omigosh…where do you start…trench warfare came to dominate the western front during World War 1 (1914-1918). It was in these trenches and in between in what came to be known as ‘no-man’s land’ that millions of young men lost their lives due to the rigidity and stupidity of their military leaders. Trench warfare was marked by long periods of dormancy followed by offensives ‘that would begin with an artillery barrage to flatten the enemy’s barbed wire and leave the enemy in a state of shock’ (570)…afterwards masses of soldiers would climb up out of the trenches and advance…all in the hopes of taking the enemy trench and not getting mowed down with machine gun fire. These offensives were rarely successful. Life in the trenches was equally as horrific with the constant presence of dead bodies, rats, rain, etc…all that would go on for months at a times with no relief in sight.

The main component signed with Germany in June 1919 was particularly important. It included an article…231…that made Germany responsible for the entire war…from start to finish…and made them responsible for paying reparations for all damage incurred to all Allied governments over the course of a few years…the Germans also had to demolish their navy and Airforce…only have a standing army of 100,000, as well as losing a significant amount of land and people…a sizable chunk becoming Poland…the treaty and war guilt clause were harsh, to say the least, and set the stage for a broken Germany and a little mustached man that said he could fix it all and make it better…
