  • Born in Texas in 1890, brought up in Abilene, Kansas, Eisenhower was the third of seven sons.

  • He excelled in sports in high school, and received an appointment to West Point.

  • Stationed in Texas as a second lieutenant, he met Mamie Geneva Doud, whom he married in 1916.

  • 1935-1939 Served as assistant to General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines.

  • 1943-1945 Served as supreme commander of European forces in World War II.

  • June 6, 1944 Directed D-Day (invasion of Normandy).

  • May 7, 1945 Accepted Germany's surrender to the Allies.

  • 1950-1952 Commanded NATO forces in Europe.

  • 1953-1961 President of the United States. Did You Know The concept of the domino theory was based on Eisenhower's explanation for U.S. involvement in South Vietnam. As a star defensive back on the West Point football team, Eisenhower was known as the Kansas Cyclone. Eisenhower, who loved to cook, developed a recipe for vegetable soup that is 894 words long and includes the stems of nasturtium flowers.
