  2. Setting the Stage • Charlemagne’s grandsons broke up the kingdom • This turmoil and warfare led to feudalism

  3. Viking Invaders • They used their excellent sailing skills to attack with terrifying speed

  4. Viking Invaders • The largest of their ships could carry 300 warriors • A ship could way 20 tons when fully loaded but could sail in 3 feet of water

  5. The Vikings were not only warriors but always traders, farmers, and explorers • As the Vikings gradually begin to accept Christianity, they stopped their raids

  6. Magyar Invaders • As the Viking invasions stopped new attacks on Europe began • Magyars did not settle conquered land but took people to be sold as slaves

  7. Muslim Invaders • Muslims attacked from the south, from there they controlled the Mediterranean

  12. Manors • All peasants owed the lord certain duties (a few days labor in the field and a portion of grain)
